The most improvement in the least amount of review time™

2021-2022 Mississippi Pilot ACT® Research

The Mississippi Department of Education, through the Office of Secondary Education, is pleased to announce that the Mississippi Legislature has made appropriation for Jumpstart Test Prep's Complete English Review course to help prepare over 4,500 Mississippi 11th grade public school students prior to mandatory ACT® testing in February 2022.

Jumpstart Test Prep's complete English prep review course was developed by Mississippi's 19-year STAR teacher, and STAR teacher hall-of-fame inductee, Dot McClendon. This program leverages her 40+ years of experience helping students perform their best on the ACT® exam. The program provides the following resources for students and teachers:

  • Expert content review and practice, along with test taking tips and strategies delivered in the classroom via streaming video
  • Online, on-demand review (8 total modules, each approximately 40 minutes in duration) providing realistic timed practice for the ACT English section that can be led from the classroom or used individually (online, on-demand) by students through May 2022
  • Consumable student workbooks to be completed as lecture content is watched and later used as a student study guide
  • Online timed pre & post assessments completed by students following the review will link back to module content for better understanding of student deficiencies
  • Administrator dashboard reflecting the video module completion progress of teachers assigned to proctor the review and/or individual student progress
  • On-demand support

The goal of the 2021-2022 Mississippi legislative pilot is to help selected high schools improve ACT composite English sub-score averages and gain feedback and improvement research results from schools awarded the review course pilot.

Random school selection for the legislative pilot of the Jumpstart Test Prep Complete English Review for the 2021-2022 school year were made from unselected applicant schools from prior year, while ensuring representation across several demographics (i.e. geographic, school rating, ethnic make-up, free/reduced lunch indicators, etc.).

These 39 selected schools must complete the acceptance from and return it to Jumpstart Test Prep by noon on Friday, May 21, 2021. Please note that appropriated funds will cover all costs and will be awarded to selected high schools that agree to pilot this program with all enrolled juniors immediately prior to ACT state testing as prescribed. Jumpstart Test Prep will provide free student workbook delivery with school faculty orientation and training meeting.

Jumpstart Test Prep will meet to discuss our program and improvement data with any interested district or school, regardless of their selection for this pilot. For more information regarding the Jumpstart Test Prep review program, email info@jumpstarttestprep.com.

Teacher Feedback

Helping Wonderful Teachers Achieve Excellent Outcomes

Jumpstart's comprehensive coverage of the ACT standards and its time restrained practice enables students to be more comfortable while sitting for the actual test. Also, since our ACT has gone digital, the JTP digital formatting truly simulates the actual test.

Jumpstart was an incredible asset to me as an educator. The English portion of the ACT covers many grammar skills that have not been reviewed since middle school. Jumpstart provided by students with a comprehensive review of all the skills required to be successful on the ACT.

As a high school math teacher, I have been using JumpStart in all my classes since we incorporated it into our district curriculum at the beginning of this school year. With my class enrollment consisting of tenth and eleventh-grade geometry and algebra II students who will be taking their ACT very soon, I find the JumpStart program exceptionally productive as it covers a comprehensive range of ACT-related math videos and related problems. While the presenters, all of whom are high school math teachers, have varying presentation skills, all are very effective presenters, and most are exceptional! Many of my students who have taken the ACT this year have advised me that they saw similar to practically identical problems on their ACT math test that they had learned to work on in our daily JumpStart sessions.

Furthermore, when I recently experienced a logistical issue with administering JumpStart in my daily classes, I contacted and the situation was promptly resolved. So, not only is the JumpStart program outstanding, but the customer follow-up and responsiveness are equally stellar.

I strongly recommend JumpStart to schools interested in improving their ACT scores.

“After attending a Jumpstart presentation at a summer conference, our leadership team decided to purchase Jumpstart Test Prep for our upcoming ACT WorkKeys® test. Our students completed the seven day boot camp which intensely focused on each section of the test. The individualized remediation offered by the program was outstanding, and our students showed impressive gains in all three areas. The workbook provided to each student was also a tremendous benefit in their preparation. When all testing was completed, Jumpstart sent a detailed data report of student achievement. The Jumpstart program definitely prepared our students and helped us achieve an 84% pass rate! And this year or best to date - 94.44%! We were especially pleased with the number of our students who obtained gold and platinum levels.  Going forward we will continue to use Jumpstart and recommend it to other schools who administer the ACT Workkeys® test.”

“Jumpstart StartUps can make timely improvements that enhance student engagement, boost readiness, and improve overall ACT performance. Our class benefits from the StartUps as bellringers to keep them engaged from bell to bell!”

Aleks Stogsdill
Teacher
Calvin High School

“I like the fact that every answer choice was discussed and explained why it was the wrong or correct answer. It was also great to hear the testing tip that if you know it’s the right answer, mark it and move to the next question.”

Rebecca Jennings
Counselor
Gordo High School

“The detailed explanations make it easy for students to understand the material. Concepts are broken down clearly, which supports comprehension and helps students feel more confident in their learning.”

Amanda Henderson
English/CCR Teacher
Clinton High School

“I love how she broke down each answer choice and explained why a choice was not correct and then explained why the correct choice was in fact correct.”

Jessica Delk
Math Inclusion Teacher
South Jones High School

“I love the StartUps. They are short mini lessons that can be used anytime during a lesson. Most of the time we use them as bell ringers but you could also use them as exit tickets to check progress from a lesson or just as a mini lesson inside your daily lessons. This lesson shows students not all problems are hard. Some can actually be easy. We have given access to several of our teachers to get the videos shown to the largest number of students. I love the entire Jumpstart Program. I wish my children would have had access to them when they were in school.”

Amanda Richardson
STEM Teacher
Eupora High School

“The videos are well made and move at a good pace for high school students. This video addresses redundancy in a way that anyone can understand. I like the way the presenters go over each answer choice and explain why it is correct and incorrect.”

Melissa Sandlin
Science Teacher
Booneville High School

“This video lesson is helpful in so many ways! This teaches students to maintain an appropriate academic tone in college papers and professional communications. It addresses common mistakes, such as mixing casual language with formal writing, which can damage credibility in both academic and workplace settings. It’s both a practical test skill and a real-world communication skill they’ll use beyond high school.”

Rashmi Price
English Teacher
Aberdeen High School

“This particular StartUp is clear and concise. This is a great way to ease students back into subject-verb agreement. The sentence options presented make it easy to convey to the student how to identify the subject, so they can figure out if the verb agrees with it. The presenter is energetic and engaging, which is a plus for the students.”

Jamie Weeks
English Teacher
Geneva High School

“It was a good lesson. She did a great job of explaining the vocabulary and why each choice was wrong. She emphasized eliminating answers is as important as find the correct one.”

Devon Hester
Science Teacher
Phil Campbell High School

“This lesson is one of the most valuable ones for students. My classes were very engaged and very eager to answer the questions. As much as I teach these skills (because they are very often tested on the ACT), they were eager to go the extra mile and test their knowledge with the gate oil challenge. Thank you!!!”
