About the ACT® Reading Section

The ACT Reading section gives students 40 minutes to answer 36 questions based on passages drawn from literature, social studies, humanities, and natural science. The work goes well beyond reading quickly: students identify main ideas, interpret vocabulary in context, draw logical inferences, and analyze an author's purpose, tone, and point of view, distinguishing what a passage states outright from what must be inferred.
